How to identify it
Five horizontal bands of red, white, blue, white and red, with the central blue band twice as deep as each outer band. Costa Rica uses the same pattern with red and blue exchanged.

- The striped flag was established by royal decree in 1917, replacing the earlier elephant flag.
History of the design
The first 1917 striped version used red and white. Blue was added later that year, creating the present five-band arrangement.
