How to identify it
A gold diagonal cross divides the flag into green triangles at top and bottom and black triangles at each side. The absence of red, white and blue makes its palette especially easy to recognise.
Design and construction
- Adoption and legal status
- The saltire design was adopted at independence on 6 August 1962.
History of the design
A proposed horizontal design was changed because it resembled Tanganyika’s flag, producing the distinctive gold diagonal cross.
