    How to identify it

Red, white and green horizontal bands. Against Italy and Bulgaria the test is orientation: Hungary is horizontal, Italy vertical, and Bulgaria has white on top.

    Design and construction

    Adoption and legal status
The plain red, white and green tricolour was restored after the 1956 uprising and formalised in 1957.

    History of the design

Earlier state versions carried royal or socialist arms. The current civil flag is deliberately free of an emblem.
