- Adopted 27 June 1977, the day of independence from France, based directly on the banner of the Front de Libération de la Côte des Somalis and the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l'Indépendance.

- Two equal horizontal bands, light blue over green, with a white triangle at the hoist bearing a red five-pointed star.
Officially documented meaning
Light blue is associated with the Issa Somali people and with the sky and sea; green is associated with the Afar people and the earth; the white triangle represents peace and the red star represents unity and the martyrs of independence.
