Officially documented meaning
The four bands and four stars represent Grande Comore, Mohéli, Anjouan and Mayotte. Mayotte is administered by France and claimed by Comoros.
History of the design
The 2002 design added separate colours for the four islands to the green, crescent and stars used in earlier Comorian flags.
