How to identify it
Four horizontal bands of blue, white, green and yellow crossed vertically by a red stripe down the middle, with a yellow star in the upper flagpole corner.
Design and construction
- Adoption and legal status
- Designed by Barthélemy Boganda and adopted 1 December 1958, when the autonomous Central African Republic was proclaimed, two years before full independence from France.
- Construction
- Four horizontal bands of blue, white, green and yellow, crossed vertically by a red band down the centre, with a yellow five-pointed star in the upper hoist corner.
Officially documented meaning
Boganda designed the flag to combine the French tricolour's blue and white with pan-African green and yellow, joined by a red band he described as symbolising "the blood of humanity" shared by Europeans and Africans; the star represents independence and African unity.
