How to identify it
Blue, red and green horizontal bands with a white crescent and an eight-pointed star in the centre of the red. The eight points are the detail: most crescent flags pair theirs with a five-pointed star.

- Three equal horizontal bands of blue, red and green, with a white crescent and eight-pointed star centred on the red band.
Officially documented meaning
Under Article 23 of the Constitution and the 1991 flag law, the flag is a symbol of state sovereignty.
Commonly repeated interpretation
Not official: Blue is commonly linked to Azerbaijan’s Turkic identity, red to progress and green to Islam. The eight star points are often associated with eight Turkic peoples.
