- Adopted on 11 November 1975, the moment independence from Portugal was proclaimed. It is based on the flag of the MPLA, the liberation movement that has governed since independence.

- Two equal horizontal bands, red above black, with a yellow emblem in the centre combining a segment of a cogwheel, a machete and a five-pointed star.
Officially documented meaning
Per Angola's constitution and government sources, red stands for the blood shed during colonial oppression, the independence struggle and national defence; black represents the African continent; the cogwheel segment stands for workers and industry, the machete for peasants and agricultural production, and the star for international solidarity and progress.
