How to identify it
Blue, yellow and red vertical bands, with the yellow centre band wider than the other two and carrying the national coat of arms. Romania and Moldova use a similar palette, but their three bands are equal in width.
Design and construction
- Proportions
- 7:10, with band widths in a ratio of 8:9:8
- Adoption and legal status
- The blue-yellow-red tricolour dates from 1866; the coat of arms shown on the state flag was formally standardised in 1993 when Andorra joined the United Nations.
- Construction
- A vertical tricolour of blue, yellow and red, the centre yellow band slightly wider, with the national coat of arms centred on the yellow band.
Officially documented meaning
The coat of arms is quartered with the arms of the Bishop of Urgell, the Count of Foix, Catalonia and the Viscount of Béarn, the historical sources of Andorra's co-princely sovereignty, under the motto "Virtus Unita Fortior" (United virtue is stronger).
History of the design
The blue was added to Andorra's traditional Catalan red-and-yellow colours in 1866, said to reflect France's partial sovereignty through the co-principality alongside the Bishop of Urgell.
